Introduction

X/OS Linux is derived from the Free/Open Source rpm packages of Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 3 (RHEL3) under the requirements set forth by their
trademark policy. X/OS has spent considerable effort to avoid using Red
Hat's trademarks in any way that would imply an association with or
sponsorship by Red Hat.

X/OS Linux is not produced, maintained or supported by Red Hat.

The X/OS Linux 3.0 package set is identical to the package set from RHEL3
Update 2, with the following exceptions:

   * Packages from Red Hat's Cluster Suite (clumanager, ipvsadm, piranha,
     redhat-config-cluster) and Global File System products have been added.

   * The eclipse package from Red Hat Developer Suite was added.

   * Extra packages generated by the source rpm's but not included with
     RHEL3 have been added (primarily "-devel" packages).

   * Packages needed for building other packages were added, including:
     Gtk-Perl, libglade, lynx, nasm, perl-PDL and skkdic.

   * The packages yum, apt and synaptic (a graphical front-end for apt) have
     been added. X/OS provides repositories for these update methods.

   * The up2date and yum packages have been modified to fix the problem of
     showing zero-sized packages. An extended yum repository can now be
     created by using the --size flag with yum-arch.

   * Red Hat trademarks and logos have been removed, affecting packages
     anaconda-images, redhat-logos and redhat-release in particular. Various
     other packages also required minor modifications to remove references
     to Red Hat.

   * The following packages have been renamed: redhat-logos (xos-logos),
     redhat-lsb (xos-lsb), redhat-release (xos-release) and
     redhat-rpm-config (xos-rpm-config).

   * The X/OS Linux 3.0 DVD contains an extra directory "dvdutils" with
     tools to create a complete set of ISO9660 CD images from the DVD. See
     the README file in the top directory of the DVD for information on how
     to use this feature.

located in the top directory of the distribution media.

Roadmap

What can you expect from X/OS Linux?

   * New packages based on the sources from the Red Hat Application Suite
     (Tomcat, many Java packages and a new version of Eclipse).

   * Various additional useful packages and tools.

   * Overall compatibility with RHEL with the release of new major versions
     of X/OS Linux soon after the source packages become available from Red
     Hat.
